NBC’s Jimmy Fallon Again Lifts AMI Material

On March 30, 2010, by AMI Staff

The American Mustache Institute is committed to the propagation of the Mustached American lifestyle by any means necessary. However, as a not-for-profit corporation that focuses on raising funds for charitable ventures while raising awareness of the labia sebucula (Latin for “lip sweater”), AMI does guard its intellectual property with the steely eyed gaze of Mr. T’s mohawk.

That’s why we were a bit alarmed last Fall when NBC’s “The Jimmy Fallon Show” lifted direct references from AMI’s material into a skit it calls “Ultimate Mustache Fighter” where mustaches from different people, characters, or cats battle it out.

When it happened the first time, AMI sent them a friendly reminder about the Institute, and that the bookers should consider having on AMI leadership to discuss the hardships of the Mustached American people. Then it happened again when the mustaches of Burt Reynolds and Tom Selleck had at it just last month.

And then, once again, it happened yet another time, last night, in an egregious manner as their writers again lifted references to the AMI’s annual ‘Stache Bash event for another skit, and even used the lip garment of John Oates, who of course played the last ‘Stache Bash.

As a result, AMI sent a correspondence to the producers of the Fallon show, hoping they would demonstrate some self-respect and either credit AMI or have a representative of the Institute on the program to discuss the issue.

This is the correspondence that was sent:

Fallon people,

While the administration and staff of the American Mustache Institute (AMI) appreciates the Jimmy Fallon Show’s commitment to highlighting the Mustached American lifestyle and experience, for the second time last night your writers dipped into AMI’s intellectual property, and in short, used our material without prior consent from an American Mustache Institute representative or Gary Coleman.

To wit, as your writers know, the AMI hosts the annual ‘Stache Bash event at which this year John Oates performed, regrew his mustache, and had his J-Stache character highlighted. And while, once again, we appreciate your writers’ appreciation for the labia sebucula (Latin for “lip sweater”), as well as their inability to write original lines not culled from AMI’s website or videos, we would appreciate credit.

You may consider having our chairman, Dr. Aaron Perlut, on your program, especially as on April 15 we will petition the U.S. government for a $250.00 annual Mustached American tax credit. Regardless, please comply or suffer the legal scorn of the Mustached American community and Gary Coleman.

Carry on.
