The awards keep pouring in for John Axford, the Milwaukee Brewers reliever and Canadian citizen named the 2011 Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year.
This week it was announced that he has won the Tip O’Neill Award given out annually by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame to the player with the “most bulbous nose and jolly Irish demeanor (drunk).”
Ax shares the award with Joey Votto of the Reds. “This is sweet, really an honour!,” Axford told the CBHOF. “Anytime you want to put my name in the company of Joey Votto, and the likes of Justin (Morneau) and Larry (Walker), you just go right ahead.”
The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame is in a storage closet of a Tim Horton’s restaurant in Windsor, Ont. It is open for viewing 3-4 p.m. on alternate Wednesdays.
