November's Q&A with USA Today columnist Craig Wilson has me thinking about little people. One of the questions we asked Wilson, author of the often enertaining "The Final Word" column, was, "Was Herve Villechaize the finest actor of our generation?"
Wilson's response, true to form, was, "No. Not even close. A small talent." And while we can only hope his answer was tongue and cheek, the late Villechaize's career was lofty, eccentric, undervalued, and outstanding. The man could act, the man could sing, at 3' 8 the man dated models...he was dynamic. Did I mention he could sing....again?
It's often those underappreciated fixtures in popular culture who sneak up on us and we are so saddened and, in my case, absolutely devastated, when they are gone. The great Herve was one of those people.
So word to the wise those of you who scoffed at ALF, Mr. T., Ted Danson's career, or even Tom Selleck's mustache, which he removed to become more "family friendly" (thanks Christian Coalition) when he made "Three Men & A Baby."
Appreciate those little things, because before you know it, they are gone.
